Introduction: Writers’ Possessions
Hong Kong’s literary writings span a plethora of genres and themes. Print publications contribute to a better understanding of writers’ lives, their creative trajectories and their mindsets. Manuscripts and personal possessions also open a window into the links between writers and their works, and between works and the eras in which they were created, thus offering readers different dimensions and angles for thought. Handwritten manuscripts and correspondences are particularly valuable as they are vessels of sentiment and memory, as well as testaments to friendships between writers across space and time, together forming fascinating snapshots of textual time. Other personal items such as plush toys, stationeries, stamp albums, literary prizes, posters, and landscape paintings not only express writers’ interests, lifestyles and experiences; they also depict the richness and uniqueness of Hong Kong’s literary landscape. In today’s world of technological advancements, real life is gradually being eclipsed or dominated by the virtual world, so these memory-laden historical items are even more precious and worthy of preserving.
