Introduction: Rarebooks

香港文學特藏最大宗的藏品是圖書，二十年來蒙各界慨贈及由本館蒐羅，已有不少珍稀版本，如香港第一個新文化機構「受匡出版部」的多種出版物，以及著名作家的簽名或題贈本。香港文學特藏設於大學圖書館裡，不以蒐集狹義的文學作品為限，珍本的界定或入藏的準則，其實反映了香港文學的學科範圍及研究需要，因此本次展覽除了重要作家的初版著作外，更特別介紹一些較少人注意的出版類型，包括舊體文學、通俗文學（三毫子、四毫子小說）、英語創作的香港文學作品、外國文學的中譯、香港文學的外譯，藉以體現香港作為新舊、中西匯集的文化空間，其內涵的豐富多姿。特藏日後發展的方向，也將隨着香港文化及其研究的成長而繼續擴大、深化。

Books naturally form the bulk of the Hong Kong Literature Collection. The generosity of donors and our efforts at collection over the last two decades have resulted in quite a few rare editions, including the publications of Hong Kong’s first New Culture organization, Shoukuang chubanbu, as well as autographed or inscribed editions. Located in the University Library, the Hong Kong Literature Collection does not limit itself to a narrow interpretation of “literature”. The adopted definition of “rare edition” and the criteria for collection reflect the disciplinary scope of Hong Kong literature and the need for research in this area. Hence, in addition to the first editions of celebrated writers, the exhibition also presents lesser-known genres, such as classical literature, pulp fiction (30 cents or 40 cents novels), literary works written in English, Chinese translations of foreign literature, and foreign translations of Hong Kong literature. The aim is to underscore Hong Kong as a rich and abundant cultural space where old and new, Chinese and Western, come face to face. The Collection will continue to develop and deepen alongside Hong Kong’s ever-evolving culture and research in this area.
